Paolo VI On the 1st of September 1966 Pope Paul VI, paid pilgrimage to visit Celestines’ prison and in the ‘little sanctuary’ (his definition) said his prayers and gave Holy Speech . His personal gift was the cross that he placed in the cappella in memory of his visit.

visit was not just to honour his forgoer Celestine V or to defend
Boniface VIII’s decision for the choice in using Fumone as his prison
but also for political reasons.
