   The fortress of Fumone was a true lookout-post towards the south and was used to send smoke signals, warning neighbouring villages to lock themselves in as trouble was on the horizon. At night huge piles of wood would be set alight and by day bales of wet hay, giving off lots of smoke hence the famous saying when Fumone smokes all the country-side tremors. The enormous amounts of smoke (Fumone actually means big-smoke) were seen by Rocca di Cave and transmitted to Castle S. Pietro and so on until the message would arrive to the eternal city who would prepare for the worst
