GugliemoLonghi
This
illustrious medieval judge was Cancelliere of the King of Naples Carlo II
d’Angiò when in 1294 was named Cardinal by Celestine V. He was
confessor and personal advisor of the Pope and stayed by his side during
his time as Pope. During Celestines’ confinement in the prison of Fumone,
Guglielmo Longhi and his brother Marco Tullio were given the feudal title
by Boniface VIII. When the Celestine died they began the Celestine Cult.
The Cardinal protected the religious order and financed the restoration of
many monasteries starting a family tradition that is still carried on
today. The family tradition for Pope Celestine V made Pope Sisto V
decide in 1588 to give Fumone to the family.
