The
Sanctuary is to be found on the main floor besides
the cappella constructed to commemorate Holy Pope Celestine V. This
was constructed next to the original cell where he was imprisoned and died. Inside
the cappella is a case containing nearly 100 relics of which: A tooth and
a piece of Celestines’ heat, a piece of the Cross of Christ, relics from
S. Francesco d’Assisi and S. Peter Apostle, S. Paul all donated by Popes
and Cardinals during the centuries. The
original prison cell was hidden between two towers on the main floor where
Celestine could be well guarded. The
later added cappella was the area where Celestines’ keepers would have
been near him during his 10 month imprisonment. Many
pilgrims come today to say their prayers on this spot. An
amazing cell destined for Celestine. Just
3 meters long and 1m wide and 2.5m high. It
was known that he never complained about the limited space in which he was
confined to and could say Mass. Above
the altar inside the cell there is an image of the Saint in marble with a
crown on his head.. To the left of the altar a small bricked window where
the legend tells of his visits by an angel who bought him food and
comforted him. Inside
the cappella there are four emblems that carry the written story of his
life and the Longhis’ The
most important of which is above the door telling of the cross of fire
that appeared on that spot. In
the cappella on the altar is an image in bas relief from the XVIII C of
him. Of
importance is the cross given to the family by Pope Paul VI as a memory of
his visit (1st Settember 1966.) made by the sculptor Manfrini. On
the 19th May 1996 Pope John Paul II for the occasion of Celestines’
700th Anniversary decide to give
‘L’indulgenza Plenari Perpetua’ (Jubilee) to the site and is
remembered on the 29th of August each year. (the Coronation of Celestine) |
