The Hanging Gardens of the castle has been under significant restoration (2022–2024), funded by the PNRR – Next Generation EU, followed the DNSH (Do No Significant Harm) principle to ensure sustainability. Key actions included planting 26 cypresses, renewing boxwood hedges, pruning, and using organic care products, which reduced CO2 emissions. Biodiversity was boosted by adding aromatic herbs, reviving the citrus garden, and installing birdhouses. Organic mulch, created with a chipper, improved soil quality, blending heritage preservation with environmental care.

The Hanging Gardens of Fumone Castle are a remarkable testament to both architectural brilliance and natural beauty, where history and stunning landscapes meet. Built in the 17th century by Marquis Pietro Longhi, these gardens are perched 783 meters above sea level and cover 3,500 square meters across two levels. Their terraces, supported by masterfully engineered vaulted structures, are designed to support the heavy load of soil and vegetation, all of which was painstakingly transported by mule. From this lofty vantage point, visitors are treated to a magnificent 360-degree view, stretching over 40 towns, castles, towers, and ancient roads, including the Via Latina. Without a doubt, it is one of Europe’s most extraordinary wonders.

​In the Hanging Gardens of the castle, visitors can admire a variety of ancient trees, including cypresses, laurels, and boxwoods. A standout is the Cupressus sempervirens, known as “The Patriarch,” which is over 400 years old and was planted during the garden’s creation. This cypress is also referred to as “The Tree of Love” due to the merging of two trunks from the same species, which over time have grown inseparably together.

Fumone means “big smoke”. The ancient saying “When Fumone smokes, the whole countryside trembles” highlights the strategic role of the Castle of Fumone in Lazio. Situated 800 meters high, it served as a watchtower and communication hub. Smoke signals from it’s tallest tower alerted nearby towns and fortresses of enemy armies. With a clear view of dozens of towns and 50 kilometers of the Via Latina, Fumone was crucial for defense. The name itself originates from these iconic smoke signals, which warned the region and prepared it for battle.
